Mary Whalen Gradick, 76, passed away, Thursday, December 1, 2022 at her home with her two sons by her side. She was born November 26, 1946 in Savannah to the late James and Margie Cribbs Whalen. Mary retired from Candler Hospital after more than 20 years of service.

She was born April 19, 1923 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and retired in 1976 to Fripp Island, South Carolina until she moved to the Marshes of Skidaway, Savannah, Georgia in 2006. Wilhelmina Durden Benton, 104, of Bluffton, SC, and Savannah, GA passed to her heavenly reward early July 6, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph W. Benton, Sr., her son Roger F. Benton, and her 5 siblings.

She retired after a 30-year career as Program Director for the Georgia Department of Human Resources. Susan was a member of Bull Street Baptist Church for over 25 years, and a member of First Baptist Church of the Islands for 2 years. On November 29, 2022, we lost our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Denise Svetlik Portman. She was only two months away from her 100th birthday. Denise was born on January 29, 1923 to Rudolf Svetlik and Clare Armstrong Svetlik in Istanbul, Turkey where her father was the Ambassador from the newly formed country of Czechoslovakia.

Dolly found her son work as a delivery boy at the Jersey Observer newspaper, where his godfather Frank Garrick worked, and after that, worked as a riveter at the Tietjen and Lang shipyard. He began performing in local Hoboken social clubs such as The Cat's Meow and The Comedy Club, and sang for free on radio stations such as WAAT in Jersey City. In New York, Sinatra found jobs singing for his supper or for cigarettes. To improve his speech, he began taking elocution lessons for a dollar each from vocal coach John Quinlan, who was one of the first people to notice his impressive vocal range.

She was a medical transcriptionist for many years and volunteered her time to the Red Cross, and Mental Health and Adult Literacy organizations.
