"Architecture Can Heal": MASS Design Group's Katie Swenson on Building Equity Together

mass design

But when MASS arrived on the scene, the ideas behind social impact design accelerated. MASS embodied the ethos we were calling for, but they were doing it at a new and very exciting scale. In 2021, The American Institute of Architects honored MASS Design Group with the 2022 AIA Architecture Firm Award. In 2020, MASS was named the Architecture Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal, for our origins in healthcare and commitment to architecture as a medium for healing. In 2019, Architect Magazine ranked MASS fourth in its list of Top 50 Firms in Design and in 2017, MASS was awarded the National Design Award in Architecture, given each year by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

’10, traveled with Murphy to Butaro for his second visit, they already thought of themselves as co-founders. But in March 2008, when the students presented their first plan to Farmer, he told them it looked like a barracks. Today MASS Design has a $20 million operating budget and employs 207 people who work on more than 100 active projects. Nearly half its total staff, almost 90 percent of them African, are based in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. The firm’s international portfolio has grown to include the Maternity Waiting Village in Malawi, the GHESKIO Tuberculosis Hospital in Haiti, and the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture, the world’s first carbon-positive university. MASS Design Group was founded on the understanding that architecture’s influence reaches beyond individual buildings.

The first floor is devoted to commercial space—and a nonprofit community health center. I believe America has a future where everyone has a place to call home—not just any place, but a place that promotes health and is environmentally friendly, a place that provides not only shelter but dignity, identity, and grounding in a community. To do that we need to commit to a national housing policy that reflects our deepest care for each other. The right to housing is recognized in many countries, and in the universal declaration of human rights. The US must create a federal housing policy that ensures equitable access to high quality housing. But, as we know, love starts at home, and states and cities must do the policy work to ensure that federal dollars are invested in housing that reflects the cultural and ecological values of diverse communities.

JUSTICE IS BEAUTY

A 2014 project in Haiti, the GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Center, was a crisis response with aesthetic grace. After the devastating earthquake of 2010, Port-au-Prince’s only water filtration plant was non-functional, allowing the disease to proliferate. The permanent clinic MASS built there — with its sawtooth peaks clad in metal scrims that dapple the interior with filtered light — speak a visual language not of disaster response, but of sensitivity and care. I became a friend and ally to MASS, and later a member of the Board of Directors.

The labs focus on food, sustainable Native communities, fringe cities, and restorative justice. With recent support from the Mellon Foundation, we started a “Public Memory and Memorial Lab” to advance research and work with thought leaders who are seeking to imagine, design, and build new monument projects across the nation. Worldwide, memory and history in built form—memorials, monuments, museums, street names, plaques, historic preservation markers—carry a responsibility to communicate complex histories and provide spaces for healing. Public memory and monuments, in their constancy and variety, encourage us to explore our individual humanity in connection to our society as a whole. We will provide direct support to organizations on projects that engage memorialization, collective memory, and truth-telling.

We have been working to apply these lessons in a number of design projects with community development groups in Massachusetts and New York and are finding that leveraging these design principles has multiple benefits. We thank the innumerable partners, supporters, friends, and team members that made our first 10 years possible, paving the way for decades of project, impact, and collaborations to come. We are a team of over 200 architects, landscape architects, engineers, builders, furniture designers, makers, writers, filmmakers, and researchers representing 20 countries across the globe. We believe in expanding access to design that is purposeful, healing, and hopeful. The exhibition is organized around the themes of engaging, healing, fostering, conserving, and marking, and features completed buildings, proposed projects, and applied research initiatives along with photographs, videos, renderings, and models. The heart of the memorial is a pavilion held up by six-foot-tall rusted steel pillars, each bearing the name of a county where racial killings occurred and the identities of the victims.

Coming to MASS in 2020 as a Senior Principal has allowed me to part of the question facing the firm, “OK, what’s MASS 2.0? ” How do we look ahead over the next 10 years to not only design projects, but to design a firm that can constantly deliver on its mission to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity. The ability to bring great people together is one of many attributes Murphy’s colleagues said they will miss. At the same time, the firm’s leaders see an opportunity to make its collaborative essence clearer.

The firm’s work has grown to include education and housing, infused with the same ethos. I am also engaged in our Affordable Housing practice, near and dear to my heart. As a nationally recognized design leader, researcher, writer, and educator, Katie leads by example. Before joining MASS in early 2020, Swenson was vice president of Design & Sustainability at Enterprise Community Partners, a national nonprofit organization that invests in community development, as well as an Enterprise Rose Fellow and Loeb Fellow. In addition, she founded the Charlottesville Community Design Center to bring together designers and community planners.

A mural in the Point neighborhood of Salem, Mass., reads, “Knowing your neighbor will transform love into power.” Why does love matter in cities? Love is what makes us commit to solving hard problems, to shelter and protect each other. I joined the Rose Fellowship as a fellow in 2001 in Charlottesville, Va., In 2006, I became the director of the program, until I made the transition to MASS Design Group in 2020. The program has become more comprehensive and supportive for fellows and communities, and more diverse in its personal composition, programmatic goals, and project types. It is now thriving under the leadership of Mark Matel, a Rose fellow alum, and supported by a robust National Design Initiatives team at Enterprise.

Caitlin Taylor, based in Poughkeepsie, leads regional food network research and development—work intended to address the global challenges of climate change and supply-chain fragility. One project involves the development of a campus for the Land Institute in Salina, Kansas—what Taylor called “the most amazing group of agricultural mad scientists,” dedicated to fostering prairie biodiversity by developing new strains of perennial food grains. A second involves the adaptive reuse of an old auto body shop as a grocery store and teaching kitchen for the Kingston, New York, Food Co-op.

Its eclectic and interdisciplinary approach to social and political issues appealed to me. It also gave me a chance to spend my junior year of college in Paris, studying literary theory at the University of Paris. The academic work was amazing, as was meeting other members of my program from universities across the US, an incredible group of people in the film, media, literature, and journalism worlds.

Hank Willis Thomas, the artist who conceived the centerpiece of the Kings’ entwined arms, has drawn most of the attention, both vitriol and accolades. But the project began with an invitation from MASS Design Group to join its entry for the memorial, and the piece’s presence on the Common is a result of their partnership. I heard someone say recently, “I don’t know what I think until I write it.” Thoughts and ideas are sometimes amorphous until you write or draw them. Like designing and drawing, the details and clarity don’t resolve themselves until you really dig in. Architecture and comparative literature are both ways to explore the world. Celebrating 10 years of work, our first monograph highlights the projects, people, and partnerships that have formed the backbone of MASS Design Group since our beginnings.

The names of 65 Boston civil rights leaders are engraved in the tiles, and a quote from Coretta Scott King about love as a call to action is featured on the low wall around the plaza. MASS Design Group is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, governed by a board of directors who supervise the activities of the organization. Together, The Embrace and The 1965 Freedom Plaza create a memorial which marks the first step in a transformative vision for the city of Boston.

It’s hard to underestimate how exciting the growth and development of MASS has been. Watching MASS put theory into practice, again and again, and continue to expand its ambitions has been thrilling. The Embrace is inspired by a photograph of the Kings, who met in Boston, at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in 1964. The memorial depicts only the Kings’ shoulders, arms, and hands, perched on their elbows, wrapped in a hug. No heads, no faces, no torsos—a 22-foot-tall monument concerned not with rendering recognizable people but love, an emotion central to the Kings’ lives and purpose. It is the work of sculptor Hank Willis Thomas on behalf of Embrace Boston, which conceived of the memorial and raised the money for it.

We believe that every project has a mission and we collaborate with our partners throughout the design process — from early visioning through project completion — to develop and implement a shared vision to achieve that mission. We do this through architecture, landscape design, furniture design, engineering, planning, research, construction, film, and community engagement. The J. J. Carroll Housing Redevelopment project advances the vision of aging in community. The 142-unit age-restricted affordable housing community in Boston is thoughtfully designed to help residents live better and longer lives. MASS worked with 2Life Communities to develop a model for high density housing that prioritizes resident connections and communal activities linked to aging well.

Design is led by our team of product and interior designers, and done in collaboration with our network of artisans to prioritize local materials, showcase local craft techniques, and minimize the carbon footprint. This entrepreneurial model encourages and supports local artisans and material suppliers, contributes to the regional economy, and assists in the creation of new supply chains. Solving practical issues is only the skeleton of architectural practice; how to solve those issues in a way that inspires positive human experience is its substance. MASS’s first project, the Butaro District Hospital, finished in 2011, is a cluster of low-slung buildings nestled into a Rwandan mountainside and centered around a massive umuvumu tree. It grounds the hospital in its spectacular environs, an anchor to the natural world. Built on a foundation of the lava rock that lies underfoot, the hospital orbits a lush central courtyard and draws in views and natural light from the surrounding valley, a reflection of verdant, biodiverse vibrancy.

Human Design Gate 28 Preponderance of the Great The Gate of the Game Player

human design gate 28

In astrology, anytime we have three or more planets in the same sign, it is known as a stellium, which is a fancy word for super important. The energy of the stellium will be like a golden thread that runs through your whole life, creating ripple effects in the rest of your chart. Remember that while the Channel provides some insight into career preferences and behaviors, it’s only one piece of the complex Human Design puzzle. Other elements, such as Gates, Centers, and other Channels, contribute to a person’s overall design and need to be considered for a comprehensive understanding.

Human Design Gate 42 Increase - The Gate of Growth

human design gate 28

If you have a defined (coloured) or activated channel, it indicates that you have consistent and reliable access to that theme, function, or gift. Those with gate 58 defined are some of the happiest people you’ll meet, when living in alignment with their strategy and life force. However, they may become very bitter when conditioning interferes with their correct way of living. The energy of gate 58 is about experiencing profound joy, simply from being alive. Born with a natural curiosity which results in analysis of everything you touch on a deeper level.

Gate 24 – Rationalisation / Wisdom

However, these individuals may sometimes struggle in roles that do not provide opportunities for deep exploration and understanding. They may find it difficult to engage with superficial or mundane tasks and could experience dissatisfaction in roles that do not challenge them intellectually or spiritually. While Gate 28 can drive an intense and sometimes difficult journey, it is also the gate that drives us towards the discovery of life’s purpose. Those who possess this gate can develop a profound understanding of life, helping them to guide others on their path. Careers that allow for deep exploration, meaningful struggles, or the opportunity to make a significant difference might be appealing to those with this Channel. They might gravitate towards fields like philosophy, psychology, research, detective work, or roles in which they can explore existential questions, challenge the status quo, and bring about change.

Tapping into Gate 28’s Energy

This energy is laser-focused on determining which risks will make you feel truly alive, and which struggles will bring your life’s meaning. Because Gate 28 is located inside of the Splenic Center, it is always looking for danger and with this awareness of danger, you are willing to take life or death risks that many others would not. Constantly coming face to face with your own mortality brings you to a deep awareness of the purpose and meaning in your life.

Human Design is based on the idea that we are each imprinted with the energy of the location, and birth date and birth time. The shadow of Gate 28, according to Gene Keys, is purposelessness.Richard Rudd (Gene Keys) explains that Gene Key 28 moves from purposelessness, through totality to immortality. It deeply longs for fulfillment and to those with Gate 28 defined, the worst thing that could happen is to die without ever knowing why they lived. Awareness helps those with Gate 38 determine who or what they should invest their energy in. Thus enabling them to better assess the health and safety of whatever they consider worth fighting for.

Book a discovery call to discuss my Executive Energetic Coaching and Consulting that merges energetics with strategy, here. To my surprise, shadow work seemed like a language that my body already knew how to speak. As I worked with clients, going into the depths of someone’s shame and fear was like a normal day at the office. I fell into dark holes of believing that life had no meaning and that I had no purpose except to suffer.

In the earlier chapters of my life, the shadow side of this gate – known as ‘Struggle’ – often dominated. There may be a heightened level of pleasure seeking (for escape) and/or deeper despair. Then you take unreasonable risks, find no fulfillment, and become more and more frustrated or even put yourself and others in danger. You are always looking for meaning in a relationship, job, projects, friendship, life, etc.

Gate 28 Game Player (Preponderance of the Great)

Those embodying this gate’s gift are not just challengers but seekers, diving deep into life’s mysteries with purpose and intent. In the Human Design System, Gate 28 embodies the relentless quest for life’s deeper meanings and purposes. The Channel of Struggle (28-38) is my only conscious channel, one I even have in my sleep chart. The largest portion of my growth thus far has come through realizing there is no escaping this energy.

I Ching Hexagram 28: Finding Strength and Balance in Challenge

Their view of challenges as opportunities for growth translates into how they perceive and navigate relationships. They value partnerships where both individuals are committed to personal development and mutual growth, often seeing obstacles as opportunities to strengthen their bond. While this journey may be challenging at times, it is also an opportunity for profound self-discovery and understanding. In terms of career, individuals with Gate 28 often find fulfillment in roles that allow them to explore the deeper aspects of life. They may be drawn to philosophical, psychological, or spiritual pursuits that provide opportunities for deep introspection and understanding. Their risk-taking nature extends into their relationships, where they are open to exploring new depths of connection and intimacy.

They find joy in pushing their limits, exploring new strategies, and engaging in healthy competition. This gate instills a sense of excitement and adventure, urging individuals to step out of their comfort zones and embrace the unknown. Gate 28, known as the Preponderance of the Great or the Gate of the Game Player, is all about embracing the joy of life and playing the game of existence. This gate encourages us to find balance between our desires and responsibilities, reminding us to approach life with a sense of playfulness and curiosity. By tapping into our inner child and embracing the adventure of life, we can unlock our true potential and experience a fulfilling and joyful existence.

Gate 28/Gene Key 28 is a powerful symbol within the Human Design System, embodying the human quest for meaning and purpose. It teaches us that the value of life is not measured by the absence of challenges, but by our capacity to engage with these challenges in a way that brings depth and fulfillment to our existence. By embracing the lessons of Gate 28, we open ourselves to a life lived with purpose, marked by the courage to face our fears and the wisdom to find meaning in every step of the journey. Despite these challenges, the energy of Gate 28 can be incredibly transformative.

The drive to reproduce and to experience intimacy in romantic and platonic relationships. The energy of this gate is focused around storytelling, using personal experiences as an expression for illustrating ideas and stimulate listeners. Those with gate 44 defined are excellent judges of character, instinctively able to pick up on positive and negative traits. An inherent understanding that people tend to repeat habitual patterns of behaviour, and change is required to achieve a different result.

However, their relentless need for struggle and exploration can also create challenges. They might inadvertently create conflict or complication in a bid to uncover deeper meaning, or they might struggle with accepting surface-level happiness or simplicity. This could lead to misunderstandings or conflict, particularly with those who do not share or understand their profound need for struggle and discovery.

human design gate 28

Take some time with yourself to contemplate the gate of your Conscious Sun. If Gate 28 is defined for you in an undefined centre it is considered dormant. It will be activated when you are with someone who has Gate 38 (the Gate of the Fighter), defined OR when a planetary transit defines this gate. How does Gate 28 show up in your chart, and how can you tap into that stubborn energy?

27 Stunning White Kitchen Cabinets White Kitchen Cabinet Ideas 2022

white kitchen design

The main reason white is so popular in kitchens is because it's the perfect background for any other colors you want to throw at it. These yellow pendant lights over the island are just enough to add interest without causing a color-induced headache. We would recommend breaking up your cabinets with sections of open cabinetry.

Kitchen with French doors

Staring at white day after day can start feeling a little blasé, but there are plenty of solutions. Rather than letting white swallow up the kitchen, alongside of the wood open shelving Katherine Carter Design paired a patina-laden range hood with a copper kettle and dark grout to punctuate the space. Glossy tiles add a major sheen to this kitchen from House Sprucing, making them a major focal point when the light hits them at the right angle. This one choice means that the entirety of the kitchen can easily remain white without feeling flat or one-dimensional. Every unique object or fixture you add to the space will instantly enliven in, which is perfectly exemplified in this cooking space. You can prevent everything blending into a white blur by adjusting the levels in a space.

Add Farmhouse Vibes

Coincidentally, we have a handy guide to painting kitchen cabinets to help you out. Consider whether you favor modern kitchen ideas or a more traditional family kitchen. Timeless designs include Shaker kitchens, with paneled doors and in-frame options, while handleless or recessed handles give contemporary slab furniture a flowing, uninterrupted finish.

Add rusticity with leather stools

Add texture to your kitchen by using thin subway tiles, creating shiplap cabinet doors, and adding a batten board pattern to your ceiling. Glazing in cabinetry doors, rather than solid wooden doors, creates various effects that are beneficial, particularly if you are looking for small kitchen ideas. Taupe is a good neutral color to consider – it’s warming, which will combat the brilliant white and, as we’ve mentioned above, a spot of black adds drama.

Add other materials to enjoy all the benefits of a white kitchen – plus gentle warmth. ‘White kitchens continue to be hugely popular, despite the reputation that they can be too clinical for a home environment,’ explains Richard Atkins, design director of DesignSpace London. It reflects light and allows small areas that lack natural light to appear more spacious. From monolithic marble slabs to deftly designed, handle-free cabinets, we’ve brought together some simply stunning modern kitchen ideas for a contemporary aesthetic, and asked the experts for their tips. Modern white kitchen ideas are the ultimate design choice for contemporary elegance in your cooking space. Plus it works with so many different styles – pick statement copper pendant for a modern look or add a brass rail for a more country, rustic feel.

If going all out with the kitchen remodel ideas is a little beyond your budget and patience, sometimes a lick of paint will do the job. In many cases, repainting existing cabinetry with a pure white will be enough to freshen up your kitchen scheme and make it feel instantly modernized. In this example, panelled cabinets feel fresh thanks to the color choice, while modern angled black handles, a crisp marble worktop and metal-legged stools make the space feel contemporary. If you’re thinking about mixing wood in with the white, think carefully about the color you choose, in order to have it feel in keeping with your modern white kitchen ideas.

Dot your white kitchen with black accents

When it comes to making a statement, painting one wall a different color from the others is the perfect place to start. An accent wall is the easiest way to add a pop of personality into an otherwise plain white kitchen, and will make decorating the area a lot more fun. There’s something undeniably sophisticated about the uniformity that matching seating brings to the white kitchen. Whether you opt for sleek bar stools or cushioned chairs, the coordinated look oozes a sense of order and style. Revel in the brilliance of the sunroom kitchen, where every culinary endeavor is bathed in golden rays. Large windows dominate this design, inviting natural light to cascade into the room, illuminating every nook and cranny.

Add a Layer of Luster

Here, the matte, off-white cabinets are a fabulous variation from the shiny white backsplash and metallic stainless steel appliances. Kitchens that don't fall under the open concept category can easily feel cramped thanks to the walls surrounding them. It's even possible to add deeper colors, as this Arbor & Co. kitchen shows with its forest green lowers. You can instantly warm up a white kitchen by going down the warm paint route.

Accent with Marble and Wood

Floors are warm gray and walls are of cool gray paint, while the paneled kitchen cabinets are in simple white, with solid maple wood counter top, creating a warm and natural counter top surface. While most of the paneled kitchen cabinets are in an antiqued white finish, the surfaces are primarily dark, even the backsplash which uses natural stone tiles in a color very similar to the wall. The result is nice and clean modern kitchen design which is combined with gorgeous solid golden walnut floors, adding warmth into the white space. The large kitchen island also uses treated solid walnut for its countertop instead of using the usual stone counters. All counter tops, including the kitchen island’s, uses white marble to add to the sophisticated look of the space.

The white glass subway backsplash tiles on the other hand, adds a touch of modern look to the space. The classic elegance and simplicity of modern design are blended well to achieve this look. For this example, the main cabinets are all in white with black granite counters, and in the middle, there’s a large Oak-laminated kitchen island topped with marble counter top. In the picture above is a classic style white kitchen which uses various tones of white to achieve this look.

Rebel House Interior Design puts a neoteric spin on a classic black and white kitchen with a full-height quartzite backsplash, dramatic waterfall island, and flat front white cabinets. Whatever you’re craving when it comes to white kitchen ideas, these examples prove the enduring versatility of the classic white kitchen. In the following article, find inspiration from 27 AD-approved projects and get expert advice on white kitchen execution from interior designers across the country. Aside from the kitchen cabinets, you will also see a china cabinet and a small buffet table, all in white, with hardware matching the main kitchen cabinets. Aside from that, instead of plain flat white, it uses antiqued white finish to give the cabinets that classic aged appeal. To match, beige granite was used for the countertop and matching beige ceramic tiles for the backsplash walls.

When the fashion superstar is your neighbor, your apartment is in good hands. Look no further than Christian Siriano’s TriBeCa apartment project for a reason to think white. In this example, the contrasting black color pulls the eye upwards, making the space feel bigger. Create a timeless kitchen by accenting your white cabinets and countertops with black drawer pulls and pendent lights. Available in a variety of finishes, from hi-gloss white to textured woods and ceramics, it’s a style that works beautifully in both modern and period properties. Tiles and kitchen backsplash ideas are great for introducing a pop of color to an all-white space and is a great addition to coastal kitchen ideas.

Dive into a world of minimalistic splendor with an all-white kitchen island. Acting as both a functional centerpiece and a canvas of purity, the island beckons those who appreciate sleek lines and understated beauty. Transport yourself to a time when simplicity reigned supreme, where every meal was a hearty affair shared with loved ones. For the gentleman who cherishes nostalgia and the warmth of homely touches, this kitchen is a dream come true.

It is also important to learn how to plan kitchen lighting to ensure it enhances the look and feel of the space. In this DeVol kitchen, there's also a framed piece of art featuring plants to accentuate the theme further. Instead of covering them up or refinishing them, let your original architectural details stand out.

Budget-Friendly DIY Sliding Gate

sliding fence gate design

Civil Engineering Discoveries is not your typical DIY resource, but they have an excellent tutorial on building an automated sliding gate. The tutorial provides detailed instructions on how to install an electric motor, sensors, and remote control to your sliding gate. With this tutorial, you can have a fully automated gate without breaking the bank. Despite the possible complex design of a sliding door, we find there is a lot of vital value that can be realized from an automated gate over the conventional swinging gate. With swinging doors, the lower frame often comes into contact with hard rocks or the abrasive topsoil content which will only increase the rate of wear and tear of the swinging gate. The lower frame will slowly lose structural strength as will require periodic repainting as part of maintenance planning.

Sliding Gate Design (Styles & Materials)

Automatic gates are convenient and easy to use, as you do not need to manually operate them. You can control the automation using a remote control, a keypad, a sensor, or a smartphone app. If you want to create a unique and creative sliding fence gate, you can mix and match different materials to create your design.

Modern Sliding Gates

When opting for spruce, you need to make sure that you go all out with its treatments and maintenance to prolong the life span of the material as much as you possibly can. A word of caution, because of the fact that it isn’t the sturdiest among the wood choices, it does have the tendency to warp or bend over time. While a white picket fence and arbor are beautiful, they can be stark by themselves. Old pieces from salvage-supply stores, antique shops, or garage sales have loads of character -- and may offer great bargains to boot.

Steel Gate Design Ideas of 2021 with Photos

A sliding gate with a steel frame and mesh panels is a more stylish and modern option for sliding fence gates. This fence design consists of a steel gate frame fitted with mesh panels made of metal, wood, plastic, or other materials. A sliding gate with a steel frame and mesh panels offers security, privacy, ventilation, and light.

I could see this being the front of a country club or mountain bed and breakfast. For this gate, a client sent an image of a tree, and the metal was cut within an hour! The intricate design of the tree contrasts nicely with the straight lines of the wood fencing. Sliding doors are mounted on some form of wheels that are also set to turn along gate tracks.

Types Of Sliding Gates

The brick, stone, and iron elements within this gate scene blend together to give off such an elegant feel to the scene. This gate was obviously very well made to be able to withstand years of weather and facing the elements. Moss is even growing on the stone parts of this gate, giving it a truly vintage feel. The gate and bannister combination is sure to make any home front look impressive. Since the gate is very tall, it’d be best to utilize this type of design on a home or property that is much larger than the standard home.

Creative Fence Gate Ideas

Gates often are designed differently than the rest of the fence, with a contrasting color, material and/or height. But if you prefer a minimalist look, your fence gate can blend in flawlessly with the rest of the fence (almost like a secret door!), as seen here on this fence by @dahlstrom_designs. A sliding gate is held in place by a track, typically made of concrete or steel, which runs along the bottom of the gate. This allows the gate to glide along the track smoothly, but the tracks require regular maintenance and cleaning. Electric sliding gates work on a motorized system, so the opening and closing sequence is smooth, saves time and labor, and makes entry and exit from your property much more comfortable. With sliding gates, the weight in opening the gate does not rest on the user but rather on rolling wheels set on sliding tracks making it easy to open and close the gate.

Two of the most popular gate styles are cantilever gates and sliding gates. While both provide security and privacy, each style has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s explore the cantilever gates vs. sliding gates comparison to help you choose the suitable gate style for your home. Sliding gates are an excellent addition to any home, adding curb appeal, privacy, and security.

There are many options for gates, but the most popular two being swing gates or sliding gates. Depending on the space available and your architectural needs, you can choose from single, double, or bi-fold swings. Automatic telescopic sliding gates are ideal for a single-side sliding arrangement is impossible due to limited space or no runback. Because sliding gate design does not take up much driveway space, they can span large driveways and aren’t affected by slopes up to the road. A sliding design for the main gate offers the builder freedom to try various patterns for the house elevation and exterior and interior designs. You can opt for a full steel or metal sliding gate or you can opt for a wooden one.

For a more modern look, you might prefer a metal gate, which can be painted or powder-coated to suit your preferred style. An aluminum gate is lightweight, durable, low maintenance, and offers complete privacy. Sliding gates are a popular option for both residential and commercial properties as they are space-saving, convenient, and provide added security. There are various types of sliding gates available in the market based on the material used and design.

Unlike the conventional gates, these sliding gate designs simply glide through on a rail, without blocking the road. This great split-rail fence design features some of the best materials you can work with in any fencing project. The wire in between the wooden slats must be to keep animals inside or prevent predators from coming inside. Just because your garden area might be a bit on the small side, doesn’t mean you can’t have an awesome fence around it!

Plan: #208-1025

In small Modern homes, keeping the aesthetic uncluttered can be key in attaining that Modern look. By using a restrained color palette and clean lines, you can create a neat and visually appealing space. Additionally, a well-lit area can automatically make a home feel more Modern and inviting. Large windows and mirrors can make an illusion with light, making the space feel larger than it is while allowing natural light to fill the space. When designing your home, consider using Modern materials like steel, glass, and concrete to add a contemporary edge.

It basically boils down to this, she had just gone before Congress and told them, I’m going to get tough on these protests. So either she gets tough and risks inflaming tension on campus or she holds back and does nothing and her words before Congress immediately look hollow. So these students in real-time are beginning to test some of the things that Columbia’s president has just said before Congress. And that’s of a Middle Eastern studies professor named Joseph Massad. He wrote an essay not long after Hamas invaded Israel and killed 1,200 people, according to the Israeli government, where he described that attack with adjectives like awesome.

In addition, solid stone walls can provide architectural interest and character to a home's façade and blend well with other design materials. The bedroom gives you two closets and rests near the generous bathroom (with a wet room!). Building a modern home often involves a higher investment compared to constructing a traditional home, mainly due to several factors inherent in contemporary design and construction.

Plan 1289

The 16’6″x13′ master suite is isolated from the rest of the house. It has a walk-in closet, a master bathroom and the laundry attached on its sides. Two more bedrooms can be found on the right side of this traditional home. They are equal in size so your kids will never fight over who gets the bigger room. Outside, there is a rear covered porch which is 7’6″ deep. Jason Statham—hero of action-thriller films like the Fast & Furious franchise, Snatch, and The Transporter—may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of midcentury-modern design fanatics.

Our small modern house plans provide homeowners with eye-catching curb appeal, dramatic lines, and stunning interior spaces that remain true to modern house design aesthetics. For instance, modern house plans often feature large expanses of custom-made glass, high-end finishes, and unique construction methods, which can increase costs. Specialty or luxury materials such as steel, concrete, or imported wood can also raise prices. America's Best House Plans features an exciting collection of square footage ranges within the Modern House Plan category.

Modern contemporary homes tend to be more expensive to build than traditional homes, as they often feature high-end finishes and materials, unique design elements, and advanced technology and sustainability features. Although they lack special features, they have everything you and your family need. The layout is not difficult to understand and even those who have never seen a house plan before can figure out the specifics. California offers the perfect climate and location for relaxed living and homes that blur the lines between indoors and out. The West Coast aesthetic is eclectic and often filled with bohemian touches, natural elements, exquisite vintage and antique furnishings, and plenty of bold art.

Now, he said they’ve been misinterpreted, but a lot of people have taken offense to those comments. The Republican Chairwoman of the Committee, Virginia Foxx, starts reminding her that there was a student who was actually hit with a stick on campus. There was another gathering more recently glorifying Hamas and other terrorist organizations, and the kind of chants that have become an everyday chorus on campus, which many Jewish students see as threatening.

And the House last winter invites the leaders of several of these elite schools, Harvard, Penn, MIT, and Columbia, to come and testify in Washington on Capitol Hill before Congress. Predock Frane’s Venice House is sited in Venice Beach next to the area’s original network of canals. Designed as a reductive sculptural mass, the project embraces the soft California light while carefully modifying the existing 1940’s bungalow. Our "go to guy" and company expert, Brandon is the visionary and dreamer of all we do here at America's Best House Plans. He manages quality assurance, audits existing processes for maximum effectiveness, and develops strategies to increase productivity and efficiency.

Modern house plans provide a distinctive blend of style, practicality, and forward-thinking design principles. They reflect a desire to break traditional norms and embrace a more minimalist, sustainable, and efficient way of living. These homes are visually striking and designed to accommodate the needs and lifestyle of a 21st-century family. However, it's essential to differentiate between "modern" and "contemporary" in the context of architecture. While "modern" refers to a specific architectural movement with defined stylistic features, "contemporary" refers to homes built in the present day, which can showcase a variety of architectural styles. In other words, all modern homes are contemporary (as they were at the time of their construction), but not all contemporary homes are modern.

An island in the kitchen gives you room to sit and enjoy a casual meal. Nearby, sliding doors open to a rear deck just off the living room. And so when you have a question that feels as urgent as this war does for a lot of people, I think it reverberates in an incredibly intense way on those campuses. And there’s something like — I don’t know if it’s quite a contradiction of terms, but there’s a collision of different values at stake. So universities thrive on the ability of students to follow their minds and their voices where they go, to maybe even experiment a little bit and find those things.
